What Is 2‑Ethylhexanoic Acid (2‑EHA) and why was it used in coolants?
2-EHA is a carboxylic acid commonly used in coolants as a corrosion inhibitor.
Its primary function is to protect iron and aluminium surfaces from corrosion by adsorbing onto initial corrosion sites, forming a barrier that prevents further degradation by corrosive agents.
This is especially important in high-temperature environments where metal degradation can compromise system integrity. Its compatibility with various engine materials and thermal stability made it a popular choice in the past.
In fact, Arteco previously held patents on technologies containing 2-EHA, recognizing its effectiveness in corrosion protection. However, the regulatory landscape has shifted.
2-ethylhexanoic acid (2-EHA) vs. 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate
2-EHA is sometimes mistakenly referred to as 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate, which is a completely different substance. While the names may sound similar, this misidentification can lead to confusion around product composition, safety, and regulatory compliance.
Classification and Regulatory Impact
EU CLP regulation: why 2‑EHA is now classified as a high‑concern substance
2-ethylhexanoic acid (2-EHA) has undergone a significant regulatory reclassification under the 18th Adaptation to Technical Progress (ATP) of the Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) Regulation in the European Union. Previously labeled as a reproductive toxicant Category 2 substance (H361d – suspected of the unborn child), it is now classified as reproductive toxicant Category 1B with the hazard statement H360D – “may damage the unborn child.”
What This Means in Practice
This change reflects a shift from being a suspected reproductive toxicant to a confirmed one, and it comes with a stricter concentration threshold: substances containing ≥ 0.3% of 2-EHA or its salts must now carry this classification. The new limit has been in effect since December 1, 2023.
It’s important to note that this classification applies specifically to the European Union (EU). Other regions may have different regulatory frameworks and thresholds for labeling and classification.
To remain compliant and ensure product safety, formulations must either eliminate 2-EHA or reduce their concentration below the regulatory threshold.

These alternatives are integrated into ZITREC® EC’s formulation, ensuring robust protection for cooling systems while maintaining compliance with evolving regulations.
Our internal testing demonstrates that ZITREC® EC maintains excellent pH stability, compatibility, and corrosion resistance across a range of applications.
